COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — One day after a gunman opened fire inside a Wisconsin temple, Colorado’s Sikh community is stepping up its security.

The state’s only temple, located not far from Denver International Airport in Commerce City, is preparing to install surveillance cameras and add extra security after six Sikhs were killed over the weekend.

“To see we had a temple in Denver I just wanted to come out and show my support,” said Kristin Rust of Denver, who dropped off flowers at the temple on Monday. Religious leaders in Commerce City reported receiving calls and visit of support over the weekend.

The temple is open to the public and is set to host a candlelight prayer vigil at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday to honor those killed over the weekend.

“We believe in unity, acceptance, and love for all,” said one temple member about the small but growing Sikh community in Colorado.

In 2011, The Sikh Community Center in Commerce City replaced a longstanding temple in Golden. Temple officials are encouraging the public to visit the facility to learn more about the Sikh faith.
